In 2022-23 the Oil Kings finished with 10 wins equaling 24 points. Last season the Club finished with 27 wins totaling 58 points. Today (January 1st), the team plays their 34th game of their 68 game schedule already collecting 18 wins for 38 points.
The Oil Kings start the New Year playing the Calgary Hitmen. A win would create a tie in the logjam that is the Eastern Conference standings. Then it's a 3 game series with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Friday down south followed by Saturday and Sunday games at Rogers Place. At press time, only two points separated the teams. The Oil Kings, currently on a two game winning streak, can control their destiny and move themselves up to third.
Junior A Hockey Cycle
Since their modern day return, the Oil Kings have rode the cycle of losing games while building their core, winning games and then championships with said core, having that core age out and starting the process over again. In 2013-14, led by captain Griffin Reinhart and current Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry, the Oil Kings won the Memorial Cup. The Oil Kings won the 2021-22 WHL Championship led by now Utah Hockey Club player Dylan Guenther and goaltender Sebastian Cossa who earlier this season made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings.
Currently led by Florida Panthers 2023 2nd round draft pick center Gracyn Sawchyn (18 goals, 46 points), his younger brother Lukas also on the roster with 23 points, the Club is tied for second in the Eastern Conference for most goals scored. The roster also includes St. Louis Blues 2024 3rd round draft pick center Adam Jecho, Toronto Maple Leafs 2024 5th round draft pick center Mirolsav Holinka and Vancouver Canucks 2024 6th round draft pick d-man Parker Alcos.
Joe Iginla, the son of the one Calgary Flame that Oiler fans approve of in Jarome, just set the Oil Kings team record for youngest player to score to a hat-trick. The previous record holder is current captain Gavin Hodnett.
Promo Night Schedule
The Oil Kings gameday experience is among the best of all Edmonton sports options. The Club's teddy bear toss is their most famous but the remaining promo lineup for 2025 is amazing. Elvis Night is fun and funny. Wrestling Night features Love Pro Wrestling with former WWE talent Michael Richard Blais and current WWE ID prospect Zoe Sager. The freaking Ghostbusters are coming back after being so cool last year.
