Edmonton Sports Update: Third Weekend of 2024

Hello sports fans and welcome to your non-NHL Edmonton Sports Update. It promises to be a ring-a-ding-dong-dandy of a weekend, let's get right into it!

Edmonton Hockey and Wrestling Special Event

For the first time in the history of Rogers Place, a wrestling company not named WWE or AEW will perform for fans. Love Pro Wrestling (LPW), who on the last Friday of every month perform in front of sold out crowds at the Rec Room South Edmonton Common, will be providing the off-ice entertainment during the Oil Kings Sunday matinee. Fans of WWE and AEW will recognize some of those faces from appearances they have made on various shows, now you get to see them live and catch a hockey game.

Edmonton and Area Hockey Happenings

We are in the heart of Edmonton Minor Hockey Week which runs January 12 to January 21. Learn more at Hockey Edmonton : Website by RAMP InterActive.

The aforementioned Oil Kings also play a game on Friday night when the Club hosts Prince Albert. The Oil Kings used the January 10th trade deadline to get younger and acquire draft capital. Fans have seen this franchise twice build themselves into Memorial Cup caliber squads, let's keep believing in them.

The Sherwood Park Crusaders, the 7th ranked team in the CJHL, host the Camrose Kodiaks on Friday night. The 20th ranked Blackfalds Bulldogs visit the Sherwood Park Arena on Sunday. If you have a ticket from the postponed game on January 13th, that ticket is valid for either of these games (or any other regular home season home game).

The Spruce Grove Saints are in the midst of a 5-game road trip. Three of those games happen in consecutive nights this weekend as they play Canmore, Okotoks and Calgary. No matter the age group, that is a tough stretch.

Edmonton Elks Receiver Wants to do Edmonton Stingers half court shot

During last weeks "Elks Call", Elks receiver Geno Lewis mentioned his affinity for basketball including Canada's own Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). The reply to the above tweet is him specifically stating he wants to do the half court shot. Both our Edmonton Stingers and the Montreal Alliance (Lewis is formerly of the Montreal Alouettes) acknowledged the request. Folks, it is always great when you can talk about the basketball when it is minus a bunch outside.

From the comfort of his home, Lewis has seen the Elks upgrade Taylor Cornelius to McLeod Bethel-Thompson (MBT). Receiver Steven Dunbar was released and effectively replaced when the Elks acquired a former MBT target in Kurleigh Gittens Jr. On next Wednesday's edition of the Elks Call, Scout and Katherine will chat more in-depth about all the Elks transactions.

Jimmy Quinlan to Edmonton Miners Jr A Club

Former Edmonton Rush captain Jimmy Quinlan is now a member of the Edmonton Jr A Miners coaching staff. Rush fans will also recognize the name of head coach John Lintz. The Jr A Miners schedule starts in May and we will discuss the schedule when it is released.

Quinlan's Saskatchewan Rush play Lintz's Vancouver Warriors on Saturday night. A game subscribers can watch on TSN+.

Staying with lacrosse for a moment...

Maxwell picked up an assist on Halifax's first goal of the game and finished scooping up three loose balls.
