As we March into the third month of 2024, here is your weekly update of goings on in the Edmonton Sports scene outside the NHL Club. All of them could use a little extra love. Randomly tag your favourite team with an old photo of yourself at their game on social media. Start conversations about the Stingers, Riverhawks, Elks, League1, Prospects and local indy wrestling shows. Word of mouth is still the most powerful tool at these teams disposal.
Crusaders, Saints and Oil Kings oh my!
Tonight (Wednesday) the Spruce Grove Saints (1-5...on a 5-game losing streak) host the Blackfalds Bulldogs (4-4). The Saints then host the Sherwood Park Crusaders (5-4) on Friday and Saturday at the Grant Fuhr Arena.
After snapping their losing streak against the Calgary Hitmen during a home edition of hockey hooky, the EOK travel to the Saddledome today (Wednesday) to try beat the Hitmen in front of their screaming young school fans.
Coming home through Medicine Hat on Friday, the Oil Kings host Swift Current on Saturday. The Ghostbusters, a fan group based out of Calgary, will be on the concourse for photos and fan interactions. At least, I'm presuming it's the same Ghostbusters that were scheduled earlier in the season fir another Jr A but canceled.
Hockey News Coming to Edmonton and Alberta
Edmonton Stingers
Got game? The Edmonton Stingers definitely do! We are three months away from their season and the Club held a Coaching Seminar on Tuesday and are holding (another) skills camp tomorrow (Thursday). Argue if you must, but no other team gives as much back to the community during their offseason as the Edmonton Stingers do. With on going initiatives such as their hoop bus and fresh nets programs, there is a lot to love about this Club off the court. Spoiler alert: there is as much to love about them on the court also. Oh and there is this...
Edmonton's Indy Wrestling Show this week is...
The independent wrestling scene in Alberta has exploded post pandemic. RCW is the one company that was around before the explosion that is still booming. When it became clearer and clearer that PWA was not going to burst back onto the scene as restrictions lifted, RCW held the mantle steady. All the while having bodies within the organization working towards building a bigger pie for everyone jumpstarting the two other promotions covered in this weekly piece. If you're just starting your indy wrestling fandom, this is where the tour should begin.
Edmonton's baseball scene takes a hit
Whether it be at Edmonton Prospects or Edmonton Riverhawks game, Adrienne South was typically the familiar face and voice of the pre-game and in-game audio hits. It takes an army to put on a baseball show and she was always a willing soldier. On behalf of the many fans who saw her work for both our local baseball clubs, good luck in your new adventure on the West Coast.
Stay warm, drive safe, see you next week.
