14 points separate 1st place from 8th place (the final playoff spot per conference). At press time, the 6th place Edmonton Oil Kings sit 14 points ahead of the team sitting just outside the playoff picture. The Oil Kings play those Red Deer Rebels twice in the next five days with the chance to solidify their own playoff spot which would be their first since the 2021-22 season.
The Week that Was
Last Friday in Calgary just wasn't the Oil Kings day until it damned near was! Down 3-1, pulling the goalie hoping for two quick goals has a success rate of 9.7% (stat is made up) but Gavin Hodnett freaking did it whilst completing his hat-trick! Calgary won the game in overtime on a backhanded bardown shot...the odds of that shot working are lower than the odds of the comeback (probably).
The next night at home versus Moose Jaw there were nervous moments in the third period of a tie game against the last place team. Were the Warriors going to snatch themselves a victory despite being outshot by more than a 2:1 ratio? NOPE! Rylen Roersma broke the tie and Adam Jecho added the insurance marker to help the over 10,000 fans in attendance breathe easy.

The conversation about the upcoming coming week of hockey for the Oil Kings starts tonight with another edition of Wiener Wednesday at Rogers Place. The visiting Regina Pats are the second worst team in the league making this a game the Oil Kings "really should win". Always fear statements in quotations! The previous three meetings between these two teams have ended with a 3-2 final score, so here is hoping the Club puts up four in the first.

The Oil Kings have a 5W-0L record against their Valentines Day hosts the Red Deer Rebels. Edmonton has scored at least 5 goals in each meeting. This is another example of a game the Oil Kings "really should win" as they jockey for playoff positioning and possibly starting the playoffs at home. Whether it is hosting game one or hosting game three of the first round series, a victory here helps make the playoff appearance a bit more of a certainty.

Of the many things the Oil Kings do well, specialty jerseys is one of them. During this foursome of games, the Lethbridge Hurricanes are the only team in a playoff spot. In the Oil Kings Nation 3.0 Facebook Group (LINK) a poll about potential playoff opponents paints the picture of how the season has gone against those respective opponents. The season series with the 'Canes is tied at three games a piece with the Oil Kings winning the last meeting by a score of 2-0.

The Oil Kings finish the busy week on the holiday Monday back in Red Deer. There will be some grumpy folks in the fanbase if this game is not for at least the 3rd win of this 4-game string of games. Always look at the bright side, the team is giving you a look of hockey to talk about!

This time next week, yours truly will be a season seat holder for the Edmonton Oil Kings. After signing up for the pre-sale, Phil "The Ticket King" Giannini reached out to take notes on potential seats and questions. Attending last Saturday's game, he brought those notes and the answers to the questions with him as he brought us through Rogers for "test sits".
Why season tickets? Math is the answer friends. A $299 seat gets you 34 hockey games. That's $8.79/game. That's less than half the price of a gameday ticket ($20). It is a guaranteed seat that you will love for all 20ish speciality/promo nights like the home opener, teddy bear toss, united against cancer, Star Wars, Superhero, Elvis, Wrestling, Louie's birthday, fan appreciation and soo many more. As someone that cannot make Wednesday games, those missed games are put back into the account to be redeemed for extra tickets to a future game. Bring a friend and have them sit close or bring an an in-law and have them sit far away, there's a world of good deeds waiting to be done.
