Roil Recollection: Oil Kings Number 7

One forward has worn this number for the Oil Kings, the other eight had been defenseman. A week away from the regular season, will we have a new number 7? Let's recollect!

2007-08

Californian Cameron Cepak was the modern day Oil Kings first number 7 dude. The defenseman was drafted in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens but never played an NHL game. An expansion draft selection of the Oil Kings he played one season here before being traded to Prince George for his senior year.

2008-09 to 2009-10

Henrik Tervonen played 6 games in the inaugural season wearing number 26. The d-man played 61 games in '08-09 scoring his lone career goal versus Kootenay on January 2nd. Henrik's last game as Oil King would be November 1st, 2009 versus Everett.

2009-10 through 2012-13

Left winger Stephane Legault joined the Oil Kings December 29th, 2009. His most memorable game was the playoff opener in 2013 when he scored a hat-trick and collected four assists. Legault decided against playing his "over age" year in Edmonton instead taking a year off hockey before join the U of A Golden Bears.

2013-14 to 2017-18

Defenseman Jordan Dawson played two games in '14-15 and two games in '17-18. Sandwiched in the middle were 62 regular season games and 6 points. Dawson finished his junior career in the BCHL.

2017-18

The Oil Kings needed experienced help on the blue line and acquired Jantzen Leslie for the part-time job. Leslie appeared in 20 games before losing playing time to players returning from injury and the 2017 World U-17 Hockey Challenge.

2018-19

Parker Gavlas was acquired on November 9, 2018 at the cost of a 8th round WHL Bantam draft selection. September 16, 2019 the Oil Kings traded him acquiring a 4th round WHL Bantam Draft. A good example of effective General Manager usage of assets (even though these are kids, this is still a business).

2019-20

Winnipeg native Samuel Stewart played his entire WHL career for the Tri-City Americans before being acquired on December 29th by Edmonton to finish his time. Stewart had a 3 assist night on January 8th and a 3 point game on February 25th collecting his only goal.

2020-21 to 2022-23

The Ethan Peters resume shows 119 regular season games with 28 points. The '21-22 season, Ethan won the Oil Kings Most Improved Player Award. Peters played in 14 playoff games during the '22 Championship run.

2022-23 to 2024-25

Jager Gugyelka took over the number 7 in 2023 after the Peters trade appearing in 9 games. Gugyelka only compiled 28 games over parts of three seasons before being traded for Niko Tsakumis on December 28th last year.
