Roil Recollection: Oil Kings Number 5

We already know who is wearing number five for the Oil Kings for the foreseeable future but did you know who wore it previously? A former Vancouver Canuck is on the list, hint he use to be team captain in Edmonton. Let's recollect!

2007-08 through 2009-10

Tyler Hlookoff was a handy depth defenceman the first three years of the Oil Kings modern history. Whatever role he needed to play, often influenced by other teammates health situation, Hlookoff was game for the challenge. His senior year, Tyler went to the BCHL to play for the Penticton Vees. The Vees are playing their first year in the WHL this season.

2010-11 through 2014-15

Ashton Sautner has 17 NHL games on resume all played with the Vancouver Canucks. He was the Oil Kings Most Improved Player Award Winner in '13-14 and co-winner of the Top Defenseman Award in '14-15. Sautner finished with 117 points in 265 regular season plus 20 points in 58 playoff games. He wore the captain C quite well in his senior year. If Ashton returns to the Manitoba Moose for a third season he can swap old time stories with now former Oil Kings goaltender Alex Worthington.

2015-16 through 2017-18

February 27, 2016 Jayden Platz made his Oil Kings debut. Almost a calendar year later, Platz had put 10 more games onto his resume. Jayden played in 54 games in '17-18 scoring his only Oil Kings goal on January 9th. Platz played 2018-19 in the AJHL for the Sherwood Park Crusaders.

2021-22

Simon Kubicek played two with the Seattle Thunderbirds before returning to home to Czechia. He returned to the WHL with the Oil Kings and put the togehter the best season on his hockey card. Career highs in goals (14) and assists (27) and a strong performance (11 points) in the playoffs earned him a contract in the ECHL.

2022-23

Bryson Andregg was traded to the Oil Kings in August of 2022 from the Tri-City Americans where he had played 56 games over parts of three years. He suited up for 4 games with Edmonton before being reassigned.

2022-23

The Oil Kings claimed overaged defenceman Tom Cadieux off waivers on December 7th. He collected 2 points in 23 games.

2024-25 to current

The first round, third overall pick of 2023 U.S. Priority Draft Alofa Tunoa (Noa) Ta’amu will look to build on his rookie season. Ta'amu played for Team USA in the 2025 Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, a breakdown of his performance can be found HERE. The Oil Kings need him to continue his progression, there is confidence he absolutely will.
