Iron Sharpens Iron: Alexas Kubicki and Jasmina Zapotoczna Train Together in Edmonton

Edmonton's Next Sporting Franchise doesn't sleep.

On a beautiful late-summer Saturday in Edmonton, we witnessed Alexas Kubicki preparing for a potential bout at the infamous Panther Gym on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta. Joining her for a sparring session was WBA International Flyweight Champion Jasmina Zapotoczna, who boasts a record of 9 wins and 1 loss. Alexas and Jasmina have much in common including Polish backgrounds, weight class and championship pedigree in the boxing ring, so this seems like a dream matchup in an attempt for both boxers to hone their skills. In spectating and shooting their sparring session, it was clear that the two were matched well in their talent and skill sets, the two women trading blows, sweat and momentum over the course of 10 rounds. Jasmina had reach but Alexas had power, making for a very entertaining session for all in attendance.

Alexas is hosting Jasmina for 5 weeks in Edmonton, utilizing Alliance Boxing and Panther Gym as their training bases. "She's been here for 3 weeks, she'll be here for 5 weeks, she's my sparring partner and it's great work." Alexas has been thrilled about having the WBA International Flyweight Champion as a training partner. "She's a world-class athlete. When we spar together, we put in the work and make eachother work, and we're in the same weight class so it's great, it works perfect."

To train alongside a champion is a privilege, so to host Jasmina is an honour for Kubicki. "Thank you to her for coming down, because she didn't have to do that". She also explained, "For her to come down here, when I don't have many girls in my weight class, especially that talented, it's a pleasure."

Jasmina has also been enjoying the energy and atmosphere that the camp has had to offer, with this being her first visit to Canada. "Thank-you everyone for having me, coming to Canada it's my first time here and I really love that, I'm not going to lie. Everyone is really friendly, I feel like at home here. Love this place, love the gyms, Panther Gym and Alliance Boxing as well."

In talking about her experience with Alexas, Jasmina claimed, "Iron sharpens iron like you said, Alexas is a tough fighter, she's relentless in the ring and that's what I need, I just want to be the best so I have to work (with) the best." Jasmina is preparing for a potential title defense, although nothing is set in stone. "There's some conversations about end of November to defend my European title, it needs to be confirmed but I'm glad to be here. I'm just doing really good rounds and I'm preparing for my title defense."

While there is no definitive bout scheduled for Alexas Kubicki either, there is hope that an October 31st bout happens at the River Cree Resort and Casino, as Alliance Boxing Promotions is scheduled to host another Fight Night in Enoch, Alberta Canada.

Kubicki is thankful for the support from Edmonton area as she prepares for her next potential fight, exclaiming, "Not sure yet, don't want to give too many details yet but thank-you Edmonton for supporting me, having my back, Edmonton's Next Sporting Franchise here I come!"

Even if both boxers are uncertain on when they will fight, it's safe to say they're prepared for what's to come next.
