The Edmonton Prospects have triumphantly returned to the Western Canadian Baseball League taking two out of three in their opening series in Fort McMurray. Three debuting pitchers for the Prospects combined to hold the Giants to only one 1 run. Three batters collected their first RBI of the season pacing the offense to 4 runs.
Prospects starting pitcher Josh Higgins had the first three batters he faced reach base putting the Giants up 1-0. Higgins then induced a double play and found his groove. That is if you agree that retiring 9 straight batters is a groove (it is). By the time the Giants broke the streak, the Prospects had hit the scoreboard.
The Giants went to their bullpen in the top of the 4th inning and the incoming reliever struggled with his command. Zach Barnao and Dillon Bowie were hit by pitches. Aldo Rojas drew a full count walk. With the bases loaded, Gavin Fraser drew a 5-pitch walk forcing home a run to tie the game at 1-1.
The top of the 5th inning would become the Prospects biggest offensive inning of the young season. With 1-out Jordan Singleton hit his first double of the season. Barnao would again be hit by a pitch. Noah Brooks would pick up his first of two hits in the game, this one putting up the Prospects up 2-1. Rojas singled to load the bases. Nick Hagen, who finished the game with three hits, singled scoring two runners making it 4-1 Prospects.
Prospects starter Higgins retired the side in order in the bottom of the 5th but ran into some trouble in the bottom of 6th. Higgins would leave with the bases loaded and 1-out for lefthanded reliever Carter Klapak. A flyout to shortstop to Daniel Monti and a strikeout of Jayden Schaefer ended the threat. Klapak came out to pitch the 7th inning. After a leadoff double, the Giants were sent down in order.
Ryan Derbawka came in for the final two frames and was dominant. Derbawka struck out 4 on his way to collecting the save.
