For the first time in years, optimism around the Edmonton Elks feels earned rather than borrowed. Their 5–1 record after Week 7 has them atop the West Division, and the strongest reason to believe they can remain there is that their success appears sustainable.
Cody Fajardo gives Edmonton something rebuilding teams often lack: proven, composed quarterback play. Although the Elks have seemingly been chronically rebuilding since the cancelled 2020 CFL season the 2023 Grey Cup MVP does not need to carry the offence by himself. He needs to distribute the ball efficiently, avoid disastrous mistakes and make winning plays late. These are intangibles that previous starting QBs weren’t able to do in Edmonton since Mike Reilly left town for BC. Austin Mack leads a capable receiving corps with more than 400 receiving yards, while superstar Justin Rankin anchors the Elks’ backfield. Rankin leads all CFL running backs in touchdowns and ranks second in rushing yards.
The more encouraging development may be Edmonton’s ability to win close games. Their 19–17 Week 7 victory over B.C. was not a dazzling offensive performance, but contenders regularly survive afternoons when everything is difficult. Defence and late-game poise matter just as much in November as explosive statistics do in July.
There are still reasons to be cautious. A 5 - 1 start does not erase several seasons of instability, and the West will test Edmonton’s depth as injuries pile up and opponents make adjustments. The offensive line needs to keep Fajardo healthy, while the defence must continue forcing teams into difficult situations. More 4 interception games by the Elks defence couldn't hurt either. Ultimately, Mark Kilam’s coaching and the Elks’ special teams performance could decide the close games that separate a first place finish from a crossover spot or even missing the playoffs entirely.
Even so, Edmonton no longer looks like a team that is simply hoping to improve. After posting a horrendous record of 25 - 61 from 2021 to 2025, the Elks finally appear to be turning things around. After years of searching for a solid foundation, the Elks may have finally found one with Fajardo’s playmaking and Rank’s rushing leading the way. In a league with as much parity as the CFL, that could be enough to make a real Grey Cup run this season. This Elks team is quickly becoming one worth watching at Commonwealth Stadium!
