Calgary Flames’ Inconsistent Performance Continues

Over the month of January, the Calgary Flames’ inconsistent performance continued, oscillating between victories and defeats. A couple weeks ago I wrote an article about the Flames' resilience and adaptability. But inconsistency has been a defining characteristic of their recent play, and play over the last several years, leading to concerns about their ability to maintain momentum as the season progresses.

In an increasingly ruthless NHL, loyalty can be a double-edged sword. The #Flames' culture of loyalty may be holding them back from competing with the best. Here’s how Calgary can learn from their past mistakes.

January Performance Overview

In January 2025, the Flames played 13 games, achieving a record of 7 wins and 6 losses. This performance underscores the team's struggle to establish a consistent winning streak. Notably, their victories were often followed by losses, indicating challenges in sustaining momentum.

Key Games and Outcomes

  • January 4 vs. Nashville Predators: Calgary suffered a 4-1 loss, with rookie goaltender Dustin Wolf in net.
  • January 7 at Anaheim Ducks: The Flames secured a 3-2 overtime victory, demonstrating resilience on the road.
  • January 11 vs. Los Angeles Kings: Calgary edged out a 2-1 win, with Jonathan Huberdeau scoring the go-ahead goal early in the third period and Dustin Wolf stopping 31 shots.
  • January 14 at Chicago Blackhawks: The Flames achieved a 5-2 victory, with Jakob Pelletier scoring twice and Rory Kerins tallying two assists in his NHL debut.
  • January 16 at St. Louis Blues: Calgary faced a 4-1 defeat, with Brayden Schenn scoring twice for the Blues.
  • January 18 at Winnipeg Jets: The Flames bounced back with a 3-1 win, showcasing their ability to recover after losses.
  • January 23 vs. Buffalo Sabres: Calgary secured a 5-2 victory, with the penalty kill unit contributing two shorthanded goals.
  • January 25 at Minnesota Wild: The Flames continued their winning ways with a 5-4 victory.
  • January 26 at Winnipeg Jets: Calgary suffered a 5-2 loss, highlighting their ongoing inconsistency.
  • January 28 vs. Washington Capitals: The Flames were defeated 3-1, with Capitals' goaltender Logan Thompson making 32 saves in his hometown.
  • January 30 vs. Anaheim Ducks: Calgary ended the month on a positive note with a 4-1 win, with Matt Coronato scoring two goals.

Statistical Highlights

  • Goaltending: Dustin Wolf has been a standout performer, especially on home ice, boasting an 11-2-1 record with a .936 save percentage in 14 starts at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
  • Offensive Contributions: Jonathan Huberdeau leads the team in scoring with 29 points (16 goals, 13 assists), on pace for his best season in a Flames uniform since being traded from Florida in 2022.

Challenges and Areas for Improvement

The Flames' inability to string together consecutive wins has been a significant concern. Their performance has been marred by defensive lapses and inconsistent offensive production. For instance, the back-to-back losses to the St. Louis Blues on January 14 and 16, where they were outscored 6-2, highlighted defensive vulnerabilities.

Additionally, the team's special teams' performance has been a mixed bag. While the penalty kill was exceptional against the Buffalo Sabres on January 23, scoring two shorthanded goals, there have been other games where the unit struggled to contain opposing power plays.

Looking Ahead

As the Flames move into February, the focus will be on achieving greater consistency. The coaching staff will need to address the defensive shortcomings and find ways to generate sustained offensive pressure. The return of key players from injury and the continued development of young talents like Matt Coronato and Rory Kerins could provide the necessary boost to elevate the team's performance.

In conclusion, while the Calgary Flames have shown flashes of brilliance over the past month, their inability to maintain consistent form has been a hindrance. Addressing these issues will be crucial as they aim to solidify their position in the playoff race. I for one, have confidence they can turn things around and rattle off a good stretch to the playoffs.
