The University of Alabama Crimson Tide rode the surgical skills of quarterback Ty Simpson’s passing arm and a stingy, opportunistic defense to extend their mastery over Kirby Smart and his Georgia Bulldogs 24-21 on Saturday night in Athens, Georgia. Simpson, a redshirt junior who patiently waited his turn to take over the reigns of the Alabama offense, accounted for all three Crimson Tide touchdowns, two through the air and one via the rush, to lead his team to victory. Simpson threw for 276 yards, completing 24 of 36 attempts, and added 12 more on the ground, including a touchdown. As a team, Alabama outgained the Bulldogs 397 to 357, and had an eleven minute advantage in time of possession. Perhaps the most telling statistic, of which the Tide enjoyed an advantage in nearly every category, was third down conversions. Alabama converted 13-19 on the night, oftentimes on third and long situations, that enabled them to control the tempo of the game, Conversely, the Crimson Tide defense limited Georgia to just 2-8 third down attempts on the night. Alabama scored every point it needed in the first half, taking a 24-14 lead into the locker room at intermission, and limited the Bulldogs to just seven second half points, good enough to secure the road win. Georgia, coming into the day riding a 33 game home winning streak dating back to the 2019 season, never led in the game. After the game, head coach Kalen DeBoer told the assembled media, “you can’t overstate what our guys have just been doing as far as just every day, trying to get better. That’s what it’s about.” DeBoer, under intense scrutiny from the media, former players, and fans after being power blasted versus Florida State in the season opener, may have done enough to quieten his critics, at least for right now. Meanwhile, a subdued Kirby Smart, whose team was clearly outplayed by a razor sharp focused Alabama football team, and clearly out coached by the staff standing on the opposite sideline, said afterwards, “they controlled the tempo of the game outside of maybe the third quarter.” Alabama’s recent dominance of Georgia has been eye opening, if not perplexing. Outside the Alabama locker room, very few would have opined after the Florida State debacle that the Crimson Tide would reinvent themselves from a team that looked as inept and listless to one that would be good enough to go on the road to Athens and not just compete, but beat the Bulldogs. Alabama looked the part of a contender last evening, and served noticed that they are capable of salvaging a season that looked like was in great peril less than a month ago. With the win, the Crimson Tide improved to 3-1 on the season, 1-0 in conference play. The Tide faces unbeaten Vanderbilt on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. The Commodores, off to a 5-0 start for just the second time in 80 years, appear poised to make some noise in SEC play.
