UAB at TENNESSEE: FIVE KEYS FOR BLAZER SUCCESS

Legendary Alabama football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant is often credited as being the first to use the phrase, "five or six plays make the difference in the outcome of a football game." Now, whether he was or not is irrelevant. He was right. Most of the time. UAB is faced with a monumental task tomorrow morning when they face the Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. It probably would have been better for the Blazers if the Vols had prevailed last weekend against bitter rival Georgia. Now, the Big Orange is likely to be hyper focused. Falling short versus the 'Dawgs was not a season crusher, thanks to the expanded playoff field, but their margin for error is exponentially smaller now, and a slip-up against the Blazers at Shields-Watkins Field would probably be fatalistic to their prospects of gaining entrance into the twelve team field. But the game still must be played, and UAB might have things go their way. Anybody remember Appalachian State in the Big House against Michigan? The likelihood of UAB escaping Tennessee with what would be a monumental upset is as likely as an Alabama snow in August. Here are five areas the Blazers must come out on top to have any chance for a victory. 1) Time of possession. UAB must minimize the number of times Tennessee's high octane offense gets the football. The Blazers have performed pretty well on the offensive side of the football this far. Put simply, they are going to have to win the time of possession battle. 2) Be the benefactor of being on the right side of those five or six plays mentioned earlier. We know those plays can come in a variety of ways, ranging from special teams to explosive plays, inopportune penalties occuring during explosive plays. The list goes on and on. 3) Score first. The Blazers chances would increase dramatically if they punch Tennessee in the mouth first. Doing so would also knock a few decibels off inside the 100,000 plus crowd on hand. 4) Win the turnover battle. This may be the most important one of all. If UAB's beleaguered defense can somehow take the ball away from the Vols, maybe more than once, well, you get the picture. And finally..5) The Blazer coaching staff must outwit their counterparts standing on the opposite sideline. Out of the five mentioned, this one might be the most unattainable.
