Turnovers, Penalties Costly in 38-24 UAB loss to Midshipmen

Just when it looked like UAB head coach Trent Dilfer might secure his first road win at UAB, the Blazers fell apart in the second half at Annapolis, as the Navy Midshipmen shut out UAB in a game twice delayed by inclement weather. Going into intermission, the game was knotted at 24-24. The second half was all Navy. A 36 yard field goal by Jonah DeLange as time expired in the first half gave the Blazers momentum heading into the locker room, and UAB, a twenty-one point underdog going in, looked like they were poised to spring an upset. The Blazers scored on their first four possessions, two of which were of the aerial variety, one of fifty-one yards from Jalen Kitna to Iverson Hooks, and the other, a twenty-five yard toss to Corri Milliner on a fourth and three. Jevon Jackson provided the final UAB touchdown on a twelve yard run, and Delange's field goal would be all that the Blazers could muster on the day. The second half was one UAB will find hard to swallow, as two Kitna interceptions and a fumble by Hooks, which gave Navy a first down at the UAB twenty-nine, were instrumental in the Midshipmen shutting out the Blazers 14-0 in the final stanza, thus securing the victory for the Naval Academy, 38-24. The loss extended Dilfer's road record to 0-13. UAB returns home to Protective Stadium to face Akron on Saturday night. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 CST.
