Wednesday Wonder: What to do this weekend with the Elks on bye?

The weekend of June 13/14 was the last time fans of the Edmonton Elks had to ask themselves, "hmm what am I going to do this weekend with my favourite team on bye?" That was long before any of us were back in the swing of weekly CFL games on our television or electronic gadget. While the week two bye week was good for the football club, this week thirteen bye definitely is needed as it affords the team some rest. A nod to the all the folks who have stalls at the pregame tailgates, they need this rest break too! Wondering what you're going to do to fill in those missing hours that will keep you distracted from regular adult duties? Here are the items and ideas on my personal radar.

Friday August 28

The Spruce Grove Saints are holding their locker room sale as the BCHL hockey season nears. The Saints exhibition season starts with a home game on September 7th, which should be a sin! Like the rink is named Thompson Family Arena, the same Thompson Family that own the Edmonton Elks, and they are playing hockey on Labour Day. The Saints regular season home opener is Friday September 18th hosting the Sherwood Park Crusaders.

Love Pro Wrestling has their monthly show at The Rec Room South Edmonton Common and this month promises to be another ring-a-ding-dong-dandy. Marz let his evil thoughts take over and attacked our champ T Y Jackson. Marz being evil sparks curiousity, always an intense performer, what will the evil thoughts push him to do to capture gold? Speaking of evil, what will Lumberjack Larry and Rich King do to each other to make sure only one of them is left standing?

Never been to an indy wrestling show? Being a wrestling fan is easier than being a fan of Marvel or DC Movies cause you don't have to watch a handful of shows for things to make sense. Love Pro Wrestling's fan base is fun, vocal, and always willing to show you the ropes of fandom. Just one note, if you are sitting by the ring and a wrestler gestures at your section to move...move!

Saturday August 29

Boots and Hearts West has a Friday night festival lineup. Sharing the Saturday lineup as that is the night I will be in attendance. But wait!?! This is a sports site, why are you mentioning music? The Elks just ran a promo based on country music. Hockey plays music between breaks in play. For the wrestling fans out there, the opening three seconds of a wrestlers theme song is typically all you need to jump up out of your seat. Music is a part of sports.

Fun fact, Zach McPhee played in the WHL with the "Everett Silvertips, Tri-City Americans and then-Kootenay ICE".

Sunday August 30

The Annual Edmonton Oil Kings locker room sale always has amazing deals. Last year, the best deal was $50 for the blue alternate jersey. Be sure to be there early for the best selection. The Oil Kings preseason begins September 4th. Their regular season opens in Red Deer on the 19th before hosting the Calgary Hitmen at home on Sunday the 20th at 4 PM.

The Edmonton Wildcats go for a third consecutive win on Sunday after dismantling the Edmonton Huskies last weekend. The only blemish on the Wildcats season happened in their home park (Emerald Hills in Sherwood Park) so it is fair to say many of their faithful are looking forward to being a part of the hype. Having defeated the defending champion Saskatoon Hilltops once already this season, the daunting task to do it again awaits them beginning at 1 PM on Sunday.

If you are a Huskies fan, they are playing on the road, so you will need a subscription to CJFLtv to watch. The 2-1 Dogs from Edmonton will be the underdogs heading into Regina to play the Thunder who have started the season 3-0. You know, like this Huskies fan thought they would be at entering this game.

Cheers!
