Roil Recollection: Oil Kings History on September 23rd

Over the course of modern history the Edmonton Oil Kings have played six times on this calendar date. Five of those matchups against Red Deer. Let's recollect!

2009-10

First road game of the season, and it's on a Wednesday. Not ideal but by the 3:20 mark of the first period the Oil Kings built a 2-0 lead in Kootenay. The even strength goal by Dylan Wruck and powerplay goal by Brent Raedeke were the only markers the Club registered on the night as they fell 3-2 in a shootout.

Torrie Jung made 33 saves in the loss. Jung also stopped the first two shooters in the shootout.

2012-13

53 shots! The Oil Kings fired 53 shots at the Rebels net during a convincing 6-2 Sunday matinee victory. It was not just an offensive barrage, the defense was on point as they held Red Deer to only three shots in the third period.

In 2025 Oil Kings fans welcome Curtis Lazar back to Edmonton as an Oiler. In 2012, fans watched him score a hat-trick which included a shorthanded goal. Michael St. Croix had himself a two goal night including one on the powerplay. Laurent Brossoit made 18 saves in the win.

2016-17

The season opener in Red Deer needed overtime to declare a victor. The Rebels took a 2-1 lead with 30 seconds remaining in the first period. A lead they held on to until Kyle Yewchuk scored with 2:33 remaining in the game.

The Oil Kings outshot the Rebels 15-7 in the final frame to earn the tie but only needed one shot and 26 seconds of overtime to collect the win. Captain Aaron Irving assisted by Davis Koch and Lane Bauer started the season on the right skate. Goaltender Patrick Dea made 24 saves.

2017-18

Travis Child was acquired during the offseason and earned himself the opening night start in Red Deer ahead of Josh Dechaine. Child faced 43 shots, 7 of them beat him.

Red Deer had already put up four goals before Andrei Pavlenko scored goals nine minutes apart to breathe life into the Oil Kings. Both goals were assisted by Trey Fix-Wolansky. Trey completed the hat-trick of assists in the third period. Will Warm also picked up his second assist of the night.

2022-23

Cole Miller scored the opening goal of the Oil Kings home/season opener on the powerplay at 15:11 of the first period. Red Deer tied the game with 22 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Kolby Hay already had 16 saves in the bank.

By the time Mason Finley of the Oil Kings scored in the third period, the Rebels had scored four. Hay finished with 31 saves.

2023-24

Game two of this season was the home opener for the Oil Kings. With one minute remaining in the opening period Marshall Finnie opened the scoring. 37 seconds after the Rebels took the lead in the second period, Marc Lajoie tied the game. Finnie's second of the game came just under two minutes later to put Edmonton back in the lead.

The lead lasted twenty hockey minutes as the Rebels team outshot Edmonton 13-7 in the final frame and scored twice in the final seven minutes to secure the victory. Logan Cunningham finished with 32 saves in net.
