Roil Recollection: Oil Kings History on September 19th

The present presents to us the beginning of the 2025-26 Edmonton Oil Kings season. While we cannot predict the future we can recollect the past. September 19th is not the first ever game date of the Oil Kings but the franchise does have two seasons that began on this day. Let's recollect!

2008-09

The sophomore season for the Oil Kings at Rexall Place began with a visit from the Medicine Hat Tigers. The leadership team on this opening night was Drew Nichol, Shayne Neigum and Brendan Dowd all wearing the assistant "A".

Goaltender Dalyn Flette was beat 4:13 into the game. Flette finished with 19 saves. The sole Edmonton goal was scored by Jeff Lee eight mintues later. Assists were collected by Tomas Vincour and Michael Burns.

2009-10

Rexall Place erupted at the 4:01 mark of the first period when assistant captain Tomas Vincour, assisted by Dylan Wruck, opened the scoring. The crowd would not erupt again until assisstant captain Brent Raedeke tied the game with 4:48 remaining in the final frame. Wearing the captain C on this night was Rhett Rachinski.

Mark Pysyk assisted on the game tying goal but was on the ice 55 seconds later when the Calgary Hitmen scored the game winning goal. Torrie Jung made 21 saves in the loss.

Third Times a Charm?

In the hunt for their first win on this calendar day, the Oil Kings can also achieve many other smaller milestones:

  • a powerplay goal, combined 0-for-11 thus far.
  • a two point performance by a player, although Vincour did collect a point each season.
  • Blanking the opponent in the first period
  • Score a 2nd period goal
