Stop missing out on the Edmonton Oil Kings

A happy Weiner Wednesday to those who partake! A classic minor hockey league promo, the Edmonton Oil Kings also break out new traditions such as Elvis night coming up on Saturday and Wrestling Night on Friday January 24th featuring the wrestling company Love Pro Wrestling. If you believe hockey should be about hockey, the Oil Kings are the right option for you as the Club sits 5th in the Eastern Conference only 5 points behind the Saskatoon Blades. The Blades are the team in town tonight while fans inhale toonie priced hot dogs.

Every Friday Western Hockey League (WHL) power rankings are released. Since being ranked at number 14 on January 3rd, the Oil Kings collected 5 of a possible 6 points. All three games were against the number 5 ranked Lethbridge Hurricanes. The first game was in Lethbridge where the Club chased the 'Canes 7-0-0 goaltender only 10 minutes into the first period scoring three goals. The final was a 7-3 win. Game two was in Edmonton on Saturday where give me a hell yeah the Oil Kings outshot the Canes 3:16 in the first period. Despite some penalty trouble in the second period, Edmonton won 5-2. Sunday's game in Edmonton saw the Club score an even strength, power play and shorthanded goal building up a 3-0 lead. The Hurricanes ended up winning 4-3 in a shootout.

Stars of the Week Gone by

Following each game is the traditional "three stars". Here is who was officially selected for each game plus an unofficial pick.

  • Friday: Landon Hanson (2 goals, 1 assist), Parker Alcos (1 goal, 2 assist) Unoffical: Roan Woodward (2 goals)
  • Saturday: Gracyn Sawchyn (1 goal, 2 assists), Landon Hanson (1 goal, 1 assist) Unofficial: Ethan Simcoe (21 saves in the 2nd period)
  • Sunday: Alex Worthington (44 saves) Unofficial: Gavin Hodnett (2 assists)

Sure the road to the bronze medal had to go through Team Canada, but congratulations to Oil Kings Adam Jecho and Miroslav Holinka on their medals. We look forwarding to seeing you back on the ice here in Edmonton.

WHL TRADE DEADLINE THURSDAY JANUARY 9TH at 6PM

As of press time, there have already been 16 trades in "2025" ahead of the impending deadline. Prior to the calendar flipping over to 2025, Oil Kings acquired defenceman Niko Tsakumis from the Kamloops Blazers. Will that be the Club's only move?

  • Saturday, January 11th hosting the Medicine Hat Tigers. Currently tied for 2nd in the Eastern Conference 3 points ahead of Edmonton. The Oil Kings have two games in hand and Elvis in the building!
